I just got back from my Thursday morning ritual of dropping Pickles off to school and then took a deviation to stop by a store and buy some pretty kitchen cafe curtains. I couldn't decide on one pair so I bought three. Will return the extra ones later.
Just read about Slumdog Millionaire bagging as many as 10 Oscar nominations. I am so excited. For the fact that the movie is being thematically so applauded. I loved the sensitivies, the precise color palettes, the strong visuals in the film. Also the fact that even though it is so adapted for foreign audiences, it remains domesticated for the most part. I noticed the foreignization is pieces like where Latika serves a sandwich to the local goon when he is hungry. A sandwich, in my opinion, is hardly what a man like him would ask for. Even the way she moves her hands while making it, was somewhat distanced for me. Pinto's strong body language isn't always Indian (if there is sthg like that). The bluntness of the film. Dev Patel's eyes and body language too add so much to the film. He is forever looking for sthg, his eyes aren't peaceful, his limbs always drawn within.
What I absolutely freaked out on was the music. 'Jai Ho' builds you up and is such a fitting finale. Jai ho to A.R. Rahman. I just wish the film would release quickly in India. If I were in India, I would be thirsting to watch it. I must credit my sistah for telling me about it in the first place. I guess the movie's appeal lies in the fact that it is so universal. It seemed like almost everyone's story at some point, some level or the other. Also, thankfully, it didn't me feel nostalgic and moppy about India or I wouldn't have been able to distance myself and write this.

Also, I so enjoyed reading about NM's festival celebrations. Really wish I could fly a kite. Seems rather unlikely in this freezing temperature.

can't wait to see the movie myself.
Although I must say I don't think this is Rahman's best work - but as long as he's getting his due, I'm more than glad.
meanwhile, read up on this:
